Area Converter

Land and floor space come in units that grew up separately — square feet for apartments, acres for lots, hectares for farms — and eyeballing between them rarely works. This converter links square meters, square kilometers, square feet, square yards, square miles, acres, and hectares through their exact metric equivalents.

An acre isn't a square
An acre is a fixed 43,560 square feet but has no set shape — historically one chain by one furlong. A hectare, by contrast, is exactly 100 m by 100 m, or 10,000 square meters.
Area scales as the square
Area factors are the square of length factors, so a room 10% longer and wider gains about 21% more floor space — not 10%.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in an acre?

43,560 square feet. An acre is about 4,046.86 square meters, and dividing by the 0.092903 square meters in a square foot gives the familiar 43,560 figure.

How big is a hectare?

10,000 square meters — a square measuring 100 meters on each side. That makes one hectare equal to about 2.47 acres.

How many acres are in a square mile?

640 acres. A square mile covers about 2.59 million square meters, or roughly 259 hectares.

How accurate is this area calculator?

The math is deterministic — the same inputs always produce the same output, and the formula is shown above. Accuracy of the answer for your situation depends on how well your inputs match reality and how well the formula models the question.

Why does Google show a slightly different conversion?

For most units the answer is identical to many decimal places. Differences usually come from currency rates (which fluctuate intraday — this tool shows the ECB's daily reference rates) or rounding. We display up to 4 decimals.
